Angel Locsin at the International Scene

What sets Angel Locsin apart from her contemporaries?

Angel's iEmmy nomination for best actress for her sterling portrayal as 'Lyka' in Lobo is a feat that is difficult to duplicate.

In fact, Angel is the first Filipina that received an iEmmy nomination for best actress.  Despite ABS-CBN's press release that Angel was the second Filipina that received that nomination, our extensive research of iEmmy and US Emmy databases invalidates that claim.  Click our story here.

I believe I have already blogged almost all stories related to Angel's iEmmy last year.  For those who missed them, click here.  You should get several pages of iEmmy related stories with photos and videos.

With this international recognition, Angel will always be at the forefront among her local contemporaries at the international scene.

When Angel penetrated the international scene, Twilight Angels followed closely her journey to the iEmmy read carpet and we made a mark too.  Actually, I only saw this site by chance last week while checking out some news update on Angel.  This is the site that interviewed Angel and other celebrities at the iEmmy red carpet with regards to their beauty secret.  To read our stories that caught their attention, click here.

Moving on to Twitter, for those who have not yet joined the bandwagon, I would encourage you to do so.  If you think this is just another fad, I believe otherwise.  What I like best about Twitter is its ability in breaking down the communication barrier between the masses and celebrities.  Now there is a site called Giant Red Carpet which compiles a list of celebrities on Twitter.  In its list of actors, Angel is the only Filipino celebrity that has been included.  Check it out here.

With Angel's recent winning of FHM Sexiest Woman in the World title (click here for our stories), fans should check out also Angel's entry at an online men's magazine, AskMen.com.  Ranking of women in top 99 is released yearly.  Overall scores were determined by a vote from readers and staff.  I am not familiar with this site and perhaps other fans as well because if you check out Angel's information, it is outdated since 2008.

[News] Angel Locsin Receives Offers from International Producers

This news came out a couple of days ago but as usual I took my time in blogging about it so I guess by now it is already a habit. Expect things to become slower in the next couple of weeks since I will be going on a holiday and I am not sure how often I can go online.

I know nobody is interested but I will still blog about where I am going hee. I will be attending a concert of my fave Korean artist, Kim Hyun Joong or Yoon Ji Hoo of Boys Over Flowers, in Hong Kong with a couple of my co-twilight angels so it will be doubly fun. Those with keen observation may have noticed that I used to have "other celebrities" in my description of the blog before and it is only recently I removed it. At first, I was planning to blog about him and Angel together but he has too many bloggers already and some of the active ones are also our "kababayan". There is a big difference in terms of netizens support to Koreans celebrities as compared with us but I am hopeful that we will get there.

Perhaps Angel's iEmmy is a start and in immediate future our celebrities will gain a big non-Filipino followers as well. Going back to fans support, I would like to commend Team Gelo for their support to Angel's iEmmy in New York. With their effort and collaboration with other supporters, we got almost real-time update on Angel's iEmmy and the team managed to send materials to ABS-CBN for SNN's broadcast. Well done Team Gelos!

Going back to Angel, you may wonder apart from attending the awarding ceremony, did Angel had successfully maximize the opportunity to do networking with foreign professionals? I am happy to share this news that she did!

It’s been days since she returned from New York, but Angel Locsin still can’t believe that she took part in the 37th International Emmy Awards as one of the nominees for Best Foreign Actress. But aside from her much-talked-about red carpet experience, the 23-year-old also fielded offers to do projects from several foreign production outfits. “May mga nagbigay ng calling cards e. Meron pang gustong makipag-co-produce sa ABS-CBN. Pero ayoko munang magsalita tungkol dun, ayokong pangunahan. Darating kung darating. Para sa akin yung experience lang talaga na ma-nominate is already something I can really be proud of. Okay na ako dun. Ayokong mag-expect ng higit pa dun,” she said in an interview with ABS-CBN reporters last Monday, November 30. [omitted the rest of the article]
As we previously reported here, here and here, Angel attracted the attention of international paparazzi and have been mentioned as well in US-based websites. This week, I found additional websites that featured Angel.

Here's the article written by Paul Baranda, founder & executive editor of Beyond Beauty Basic, a New Jersey based website with its posts syndicated online in the Chicago Sun Times and Reuters

Beautifully dressed at the 37th International Emmy Awards

The red carpet welcomed some of the most beautiful attendees donned in gorgeous dresses and black-ties. Brazilian model and actress Juliana Paes wore a beautiful form-fitting, off-white satin, one shoulder dress which set off tons of camera flashes. When asked for her “beauty secret” by our friend Jeannine Morris from BeautySweetSpot.com, Juliana replied, “Drink lots of water!” Though Ed Westwick who plays Chuck Bass on the Gossip Girls hurriedly walked past the paparazzi, we did get a chance to speak to the Best Actress Nominee, Angel Locsin whose dress blinded the crowd. The actress from the Philippines wore a stunning gown decorated with 13lbs of Swarovski crystals and flowed into a sea of feathers, which had been held up in Customs two nights before the gala. The recurring beauty tip from the stars including Keke Palmer and Angel Locsin was, “Always wash your makeup off before you go to bed.” It was advice they clearly followed themselves from looks of their gorgeous complexions.

Check out the gallery below to see some of the great pics taken by our pro events photographer, Aaron Lim. [omitted other parts of the article]

As you can see, it is only Angel who had her pictures posted twice apart from Ed Westwick, a close up and a full view of her gown. Here's the close up of Angel's pictures. These pictures are of high quality and you will appreciate Angel and her gown more when you enlarge these pictures by clicking them. I highly recommend that you view them in enlarged format so you will see how gorgeous Angel was and understand why she was a head turner in this beautiful gown at the red carpet.

Here's another article from Jeannine Morris of Beauty Sweet Spot

International Emmy Awards: Star Secrets

On Monday, November 23rd, the 37th International Emmy Awards were held at the Hilton Hotel in NYC and I was lucky enough to cover the red carpet and press room with Paul Baranda of BeyondBeautyBasics. British comedian, Graham Norton, hosted the event and many American phenomenons presented the awards such as: Ed Westwick (yes, Chuck Bass), Alexa Chung of MTV, Barbara Walters, Henry Kissinger, Matthew Rhys, Moby and Rachel Roy. While out on the red carpet, I scored some beauty tips from some of the most stunning starlettes of the evening.

Best Actress Nominee for her role in "In the Wolf," Angel Locsin, wore a dress by a Filipino designer, which was draped in 6 kilos of Swarovski crystals. That's 13lbs! Her biggest beauty tips were to, "sleep well and always, always remove your makeup." Locsin was such a sweet heart to speak with. You can watch my interview with her here.

[omitted interviews with Brazilian actress and model Juliana Paes and Nickelodeon actress, Keke Palmer]. Only these three ladies are featured in this article.

The third article is from Ted Reyes of Filipino Express, a US-based publication, who described that Angel stunned the global press and fellow gala attendees with her beauty and elegance. Here's another photo, credit to Sheryl Garcia-Reyes of Filipino Express.

Here are the video clips of SNN and The Buzz coverage relating to Angel's iEmmy from her arrival in Manila; many thanks to

[News] Angel Locsin in iEmmy Now with U.S. Stars

This is a quick post ...

Good or bad, Angel Locsin's appearance at the red carped in the 37th International Emmy Awards made waves. This is better than simply being ignored. As Dolphy said to Angel when she just joined ABS, "good or bad publicity is still a publicity. You should start worrying when no one talks about you anymore."

I saw this article in a site (guest of a guest) based in New York. Angel's picture is posted alongside with US celebrities and her co-nominees have not been featured.

Now, if you visit Cognac Wellerlane's website, you will see it is Angel's first two photos that are being displayed in Cogna'c article. Again, Angel's co-nominees have not been featured as well as other stars.

[pictures of other stars are posted here]

As they say, you cannot please everybody. In the entertainment section of Boston Herald, there is an article with a title, "Divas need to hide these dresses away." There are four divas featured here along with Angel. Other divas are Rihanna (singer), Emma de Caunes (Angel's co-nominee from France and Mr. Bean's leading lady in one of his films), and Sonya Kraus (German TV presenter and former model). Well, at least Angel is in good company hee.

To give you an idea on what transpired during the iEmmy awards night, here are some of the fans accounts from GELO thread in PEx. For other fans accounts, click here. Many thanks GELOs Press!

so we went down to support GEL na WE GOT THE GOOD SPOT..ANG TAGAL SA LABAS NI GEL.SHE [is] THE CENTER OF ATTRACTION TALAGA..GRABEEEEEEEEEEEEEE..SHE SO BEAUTIFUL ,ELEGANT..ang mga foreign press ayaw nilang tigilan si LOLA SA INTERVIEW AT CAMERA...wowwwwwwwwwwwwwww baby...GEL WERE PROUD OF U..YOUR THE BEST IN OUR HEART[s] --luludia77@PEx

We did not go outside the Hilton were the red carpet was because the weather last night in NYC was really cold and windy. We decided to stand next to the escalator going up to the function hall. We had such a good vantage view of everyone coming and of course friendly as we are we befriended the security guard that was ushering all the guest up the escalator "nagpapalakas"! Anyway we were standing there a long time together with the other guests and visitors at the Hilton. At one point one guy asked me who we were waiting for ready with our cameras and I said the moment your hear the screams from the outside and us here you will know! I said " she is our number one actress from the Phil."! Oh he said and waited with us too. Then we heard all the screaming outside and somebody said "she's here". Before that there were these 3 guys good looking British Actors hamming infront of us to take there pictures! We obliged and then one said "You are waiting for the woman in white are you?" And we all said "Yes". And he said "I am going to marry her"! When he said this we all shouted "No" and we all started laughing and then they all went there way up the escalator. It took such a long time for Gel to get in because everyone, I mean everyone of the press wanted her picture and interview. -
cutebteb@PEx

Sa red carpet maraming guests ang hilton na nagaantay kon sino ang darating na stars at kumukuha din sila ng mga pics, ang sabi nang isang guest she must be a big star kasi matagal raw pakawalan ng press at nakisigaw na rin sila Angel! [Non-Angel] A Dangerous Life: Tessie Tomas Nomination in iEmmy?

It has been widely reported in national TV like SNN (Showbiz News Ngayon) and national broadsheets like Inquirer, Manila Bulletin, and Philippine Star that Angel Locsin is the second Filipina that has been nominated in the International Emmy Awards. According to their reports, Tessie Tomas had been nominated in Supporting Best Actress category (sometimes they wrote best actress) in 1988 for playing the role of Imelda Marcos in HBO produced mini-series, "A Dangerous Life".

Brief Info on "A Dangerous Life"

This is a TV movie about the 1986 People Power Revolution in the Philippines directed by Robert Markowitz and written by David Williamson. It was originally released as a six-hour HBO mini-series in the United States and was later edited down as a 162-minute television movie.

The drama focuses on two American journalists caught up in the revolution. Gary Busey stars as an American TV journalist, on the scene when the tempestuous situation in Manila boils over. He puts his own life on the line to get the inside story of the overthrow of the Marcos regime. By its very nature, most of the film had to be shot everywhere but the Philippines.

Cast Includes: Gary Busey, Rebecca Gilling, Tessie Tomas, Ruben Rustia, Laurice Guillen. Executive Producers: Jim McElroy, Hal McElroy, Lope V. Juban Jr.

To watch the video, click here or visit RedSeptember21 channel in youtube. Photos credit to veroli1974@missosology.

Trivia:
  • Most of the filming was done in Sri Lanka because of security concerns.
  • The producers McElroy & McElroy had previously been forced to abandon filming in the Philippines with a movie called The Year of Living Dangerously (1982). A similar title to "A Dangerous Life" - for which they arranged a two million dollar insurance cover against being forced out again.
  • In the first drafts of the script, the characters Tony and Angie were simply boyfriend and girlfriend. In later versions it was thought that making them married would add more to their arguments and separation.

Nomination at the International Emmy?

This HBO mini-series was first shown in the United States. For this reason, it did not meet the criteria for the International Emmy Award which is given only to television programs initially aired outside the U.S. Secondly, the Best Actor and Best Actress categories were only added in 2005. To-date, there is no best supporting actress category for International Emmy awards.

Nomination at the U.S. Emmy?

I searched for any awards and nominations received by this miniseries but I found zilch, which is similar to what I found when I searched for Emmy nomination of Tessie Tomas and other performers.

So I used another route. I searched for the director's body of work. I found a couple of articles on Robert Markowitz which mentioned that under his direction, actors have received more than a dozen Emmy® nominations for their performances, with several winners among them but neither Tessie Tomas nor "A Dangerous Life" has been mentioned.

Many thanks to Kim@Twilight Angels forum/vkim3111@PEx for the tip on the links where we can check the previous Emmy winners and nominees. I checked the Daytime Emmys for 1989, 1988, and 1990. Also, I checked the Primetime Emmy database for a 3 year period for the following categories to cover all bases: outstanding supporting actress in a miniseries or special, outstanding supporting actress in a drama series, outstanding lead actress movie in a miniseries or special, and outstanding lead actress in a drama series.

This article has been in my draft box for more than a week because I have been trying to validate the nomination of Tessie Tomas but to no avail. Kim, Angeladik (my regular chatmate in the shoutbox) and I have been trying to do cross-checking but we can't find any proof of the Emmy nomination of Tessie Tomas. I also sent a tweet to @darlasauler about this fact at the same time requesting SNN and broadsheets to do further research. She tweeted back her thanks but I am not sure if a research is being done because I saw an article of ABS-CBN today mentioning again that Angel is the 2nd Filipina to be nominated under the best actress category in the competition.

This article has not been written to discredit Tessie Tomas because I personally believe that she is a good actress. All we want is for reports in national TV and broadsheets to be factual. Angel should have the distinction of being the 1st Filipina to have been nominated in the International Emmy Best Actress category.

[Video] E! Interviews Angel Locsin at the iEmmy Awards Gala

It is disconcerting how a respectable national broadsheet like Manila Bulletin allows its writer to base his report on bloggers with unverified credibility in talking about fashion and had even quoted the opinion of a US-based newly graduate contributor writer of Stylecaster.com. I suppose I would not be surprised if in future I will read opinions of primary students' bloggers and no one would find it amiss if I call them online fashion critics hee.

As mentioned in my previous story here, I am paying attention only to reports of people who attended the iEmmy event and not those so-called online fashion critics who simply look at pictures and voila, became a fashion connoisseur! I believe fashion should not be limited only to well known designers but should welcome also emerging designers like those coming from Asia.

We already saw the interview of Angel by Cognac Wellerlane, here's another interview this time by Jeannine Morris for E! and like Cognac, she confirmed that Angel looks stunning in her gown by Michael Cinco. Cognac and Jeannine both asked about her gown and took a full video of it. Here's the video clip of Angel's interview, credit to BeautySweetSpot@YouTube. Thanks to bituin8989@PEx of GELO thread for the tip on video link.

Here's the scaps of Angel showing off her gown.
